He was born as ‘ Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam‘ on 16th April, 1973.

He was raised in a musical family and taught to play several instruments including guitar, drums, and djembe, as his father Mor Thiam was a renowned percussionist & jazz musician, and his mother Kine was a dancer. At state of New Jersey, Akon got acquainted to crime as well as hip-hop and R&B music. He was jailed for armed robbery and drug dealing charges.

In his three years imprisonment, Akon improved his music abilities, and started to receive appreciation for his musical work. When he came out of jail, he got involved in songwriting and recorded many tracks in a home studio. Later the songs Akon recorded with Stephens, found their way to Universal’s imprint SRC Records, and the label released his debut solo album ‘Trouble’ in 2004, which was a mix of his West African-styled silky vocals and hip-hop-influenced lyrics with East Coast and Southern-styled beats.

He came to prominence by ‘Lonely’, a single from his album ‘Trouble’. His second studio album ‘Konvicted’ was released in 2006, Akon was nominated for three Grammy Awards for two singles from this album; ‘Smack That’ featuring Eminem and ‘I Wanna Love You’ featuring Snoop Dogg. ‘I wanna love you’ was his first number-one single on the famous Billboard Hot 100. Akon was a close friend of pop king Michael Jackson and he released a tribute song called ‘ Cry Out Of Joy‘ after the unexpected death of Michael Jackson.

‘Sexy Bitch’ was his first house track collaboration with which became a ‘summer anthem’ all over the world. In 2005, Akon founded his first record ‘Konvict Muzik’ with Melvin Brown and later in 2006, he started his new record label ‘Kon Live Distribution’ under Interscope Records. ‘Konvict Clothing’ is the name of his clothing line, launched by him in 2007.
